Before you jet off to the PNW, here is everything you need to know before heading to McCall in August.
Thanks to McCall’s 5,030-foot elevation, temperatures remain pleasantly mild even at the peak of summer. Daytime highs in August typically land in the low-to-mid 80s °F, making it perfect weather for lake days and trail time.
Evenings cool off quickly, often dropping into the low 50s, so do not let those sunny afternoons fool you into packing too lightly.
August is one of McCall’s driest months, but brief afternoon thunderstorms are not unheard of in the mountains.
Compared with the rest of the year, August offers the most sunshine and the warmest temperatures. If you’re craving water activities or outdoor adventures, this is one of the best times of year to visit.
August is peak season in McCall, and for good reason. Every outdoor activity the area is known for is fully open and running. Whether you are here for the water, the trails, or simply the laid-back mountain-town atmosphere, there is no shortage of things to do.

Payette Lake is the centerpiece of any McCall summer, and August is the warmest the water gets all year. There’s an abundance of lake activities you can take part in, and most of them center around the Legacy Park area.
Enjoy boating, cruising, kayaking, swimming, jet skiing, or just taking in the stunning mountain views from one of the many beaches. If you’re craving lakeside solitude, hop over to the quieter North Beach for a more scenic swim spot.
Payette Lake is an easy walk from downtown, but it’s also not the only lake in the area. Head to Little Payette Lake for fishing, swimming, and wildlife-watching.
If you want to get out on the water, you’ll find a great range of boat rental outfits covering everything from kayaks and paddleboards to pontoon boats and jet skis.
A morning paddleboard session on the glassy lake before the afternoon breeze picks up is one of the great McCall experiences. If you are staying at a vacation rental with a private dock, even better.
Brundage Mountain does not shut down when the ski season ends. In fact, the ski resort offers nearly as many activities in the summer as it does in the winter months.
From lift-served mountain biking, hiking, and an 18-hole disc golf course to mountainside dining, free Friday night concerts, and occasional mountain yoga sessions, it’s an absolute must-visit year-round.
Don’t miss out on a ride on the resort’s scenic chairlift. It gives riders and hikers access to the mountain summit with sweeping views of Payette Lake and, on clear days, all the way to Oregon.
The original Brundage Lookout Cabin at the top is worth a visit, and mountain bike rentals are available at the base.

August is the sweet spot for hiking in the McCall area. The snow has long since melted out of the higher elevations, wildflowers are still in bloom, and trail conditions are dry and stable.
McCall’s hiking trails range from short, shaded walks in Ponderosa State Park to full-day alpine adventures like the Boulder Lake Trail, a 6-mile loop featuring a mountain lake that’s perfect for a cold swim.
For bikers, the trails around McCall are equally rewarding. The North Valley Rail Trail is flat, family-friendly, and great for an easy morning ride. Serious bikers can hit the backcountry on the Brundage-to-Bear Basin Trail.
You can’t visit McCall without exploring its downtown, especially in summer which is the perfect time to wander around its stores.
The Farmers Market runs every Wednesday and Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm between June and early October. You’ll find local produce, artisan goods, and fresh-baked everything.
Downtown’s Legacy Park is a popular spot in the summer; it fills up with families, dogs, picnickers. Kayak rentals are available nearby if you want to get out on the water.
The restaurants and breweries in downtown stay busy well into the evening. If you have not been to Ice Cream Alley yet, August is the time. The locally owned shop has been a McCall summer tradition for nearly 40 years and is only open Memorial Day through Labor Day.

One of the things that makes August so special in McCall is the jam-packed events calendar. Between outdoor concerts, art fairs, and the annual Huckleberry Festival just down the road, there is something happening almost every weekend.
Here are the August highlights.
The free TGIF Concert Series runs throughout the summer in McCall. Every Friday evening from July to September, the lawn crowds with picnic blankets and chairs for a fun, festive musical gathering.
The outdoor concerts are free to attend and draw a mix of locals and visitors for an easy, relaxed Friday evening. Keep in mind that outside food and drinks are not allowed, but there are several food options onsite.
The Payette Lakes Fine Art and Craft Fair returns to Gold Glove Park in mid-August every year. It features handmade work from artisans and fine artists from across the region.
You can also expect live music and a range of food vendors. This is a well-established event and one of the more beloved summer traditions in McCall.
About 14 miles south of McCall, the small town of Donnelly hosts its annual Huckleberry Festival each August, typically on the third weekend of the month.
The event celebrates the area’s wild huckleberry harvest with a pancake breakfast, parade, fun run, kids’ games, live music, and vendors.
It is a genuinely local affair and a great way to see a side of the valley that most visitors miss. Also, it’s a good opportunity to taste a huckleberry if you’re an out-of-towner.
The McCall Mountain Brewfest brings together craft breweries from across Idaho for a day of tastings, food, and often live entertainment.
Try a sampling of more than 30 brews that call this area home. The event is one of the more popular summer gatherings in the area for those who like their mountain views with a cold pint.
If you can’t make it to the actual Brewfest, don’t worry; McCall has lots of breweries and bars to enjoy a cold beer in during your stay.
August in McCall can feel deceptively warm in the middle of the day, but the mornings and nights at elevation get cold even in the dead of summer. You must prepare to layer up. Also, keep in mind that the high-altitude sun is stronger than it feels, so sunscreen is non-negotiable.
